Shop, Cook and Eat with the Chef
Ever wondered how a skilled chef can turn a few ingredients into a delicious, plate-licking dish? Learn chef's secrets first hand at a Queen Victoria market tour, cooking class and long lunch with Chef Scott Pickett from The Point Restaurant on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 March, 2010.
Start with breakfast and bubbles in The Point’s lakeside café, before being chauffeured to the Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne’s fresh produce Mecca, to pick up lunch supplies. Here you will have the opportunity to meet some of Melbourne’s best producers, see the relationship between chef and grower in action and learn how to pick the freshest and the best.
"Good producers are the lifeline to Melbourne’s restaurant industry," Scott says "As a chef, I consider it vital to know who has grown the ingredients I use – they inspire me to do their produce justice in the kitchen."
After carefully selecting key ingredients for lunch, you will return to The Point and help Scott prepare a three-course feast in The Point's lakeside café. Over the course of the day, Scott will impart his tips for easy entertaining and teach you the best techniques to make the most of seasonal produce. After putting these skills into action in the kitchen, you will sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor over a long lunch in the café.
This culinary adventure, unearthing the secrets of Melbourne's best, is the perfect gift for foodies this festive season. Places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Beast on a Block
Think you know a forequarter from backstrap? How about a saddle from a scrag? See it all, up close and personal at Beast on a Block – a lamb-focused tutorial and three-course meal, at The Point Restaurant on Wednesday 17 March 2010.
In a relaxed, class-room style setting, The Point’s Chef Scott Pickett will break down a whole beast, talking through the finer points of each cut and its uses, and invite guests to share their cooking experiences. Following this is a three-course dinner, featuring lamb and using techniques demonstrated throughout the day, such as roasting, braising and grilling. A selection of wines will also be included to complement the meal and ensure the experience is complete.
Scott’s motivation for hosting the event is simple – he loves working with meat and is keen to open up a two-way conversation on the subject. For years, secrecy has surrounded the goings-on in kitchens of top restaurants, with recipes, ingredients and cooking methods kept under wraps. Now Scott is prepared to share this, as he believes this is the key in inspiring home cooks.
"The best thing about the kitchen team at The Point is that we learn from each other and it’s important to me to pass this on to people outside of my kitchen," says Scott.
Scott also acknowledges learning is most effective when it’s two-way.
"I’m looking forward to being taught a few tricks myself", says Scott "I’m hoping guests will share their experiences with lamb, which I may not have come across."

The Point Family Fair Day Sunday March 21 2010
Sunday March 21, 2010 will see The Point Family Fair Day return to Albert Park Lake, once again bringing the lake alive with music, food and entertainment for the whole family. A Melbourne Food and Wine Festival favourite, the Family Fair Day sees The Point's Chef Scott Pickett prepare a lakeside barbeque feast alongside children's rides and entertainment, which is all included in the ticket price of $90 (family); $30 (adult) and $20 (children).
The menu for the day will focus on fresh, seasonal produce and seafood and will be complemented by a selection of local cheese and Victorian beer and wines. Little food lovers will be treated to a buffet-style barbeque, which Scott has customised to suit children aged two to 12 - after all, the father of two has a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to pleasing young palates!
"My kids are my favourite customers, I love cooking for them - I get instant, honest feedback," Scott says, "Sharing meals as a family is so important and The Family Fair Day allows us to bring this to life in a way that's healthy and fun for children."
Included in the day's activities, and to ensure younger guests work up a healthy appetite, The Point will provide an array children's entertainment including a jumping castle, face painting and roving performers.
The Point will be donating $5 from each $90 family pass to Kids Under Cover - a charity that has been fighting homelessness and providing scholarships for our youth for almost 20 years.
